Best camera placement: 5 rules installers follow
Height, angle, light, and coverage — get these right and even a basic camera performs like a premium one.
1. Height: 2.5–3 meters
High enough to be out of easy reach, low enough to capture faces rather than the tops of heads.
2. Cover entrances, not just yards
The first camera always points at the main door. Wide yard views look impressive but identify no one.
3. Mind the sun and lights
Never point a camera into direct sunrise/sunset or at a bright lamp — the glare blinds it. Angle slightly downward and away from light sources.
4. Protect the cables
Exposed cable is the weakest point. Run it through conduit or inside the wall, and keep the recorder locked away out of sight.
5. Test at night
Most incidents happen after dark. Check every camera's night image the first evening and adjust angles before finalizing the mount.
